Another possibility is that the wire leading from the alternator to the battery clamp is corroded. To check this, look for a light colored powdery substance on the battery clamp. If none is seen, in some cases you will find it under the insulation on the wire. This can be checked by removing a short length of insulation, being careful not to damage the fusible link. I recently replaced the wire and attached fusible link with one I bought from a wrecking yard.

Either the battery has a dead cell and needs replacing or the alternator is bad. A battery with a dead cell will not hold a charge very long. With a d.c. voltmeter, you can do a quick test to give you a clue. When idling, with accessories off, most cars will charge the battery from 13.2 to 15 volts. You can turn on some accessories, (or headlights) and the battery voltage should stay in this range. If the car has many accessories, you may need to rev up the engine a bit for the alternator to keep up with the load. If the output is low, it could be a bad alternator, bad regulator (often part of the alternator), bad connections, or a loose fan belt around the alternator.

Why wont my battery stay charged on a 1996 crownvictoria?

Dead cell in battery or something is on pulling power from the battery. Disconnect the negative battery cable overnight with the battery fully charged (12.6 volts). If the battery is dead the next morning it has a dead cell and needs replacing. If however the battery is still fully charged then a light is on somewhere or a relay is stuck closed.
