lift door handle, using screwdriver, move latch forward....will open
Just going by the question...I would say that the latch has gotten in "the closed door position". Be sure that the door is unlocked. With your finger lift out on the latch on the end of the door and use the door handle to "open" the door latch.
Door Latch 1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. 2. Remove the lift gate trim panel. 3. On navigator, remove the license plate bracket. 4. Remove the lift gate latch screws. 5. Separate the lift gate latch from the lift gate. 6. Detach the door open warning lamp electrical connector *** Warning*** 7. Disconnect the lift gate latch control cable. 8. Remove the lift gate latch. 9. The installation is the reverse of the removal. > If necessary, use Multi-Purpose Grease Spray F5AZ-19G209-AA or equivalent meeting Ford Specification ESR-M1C159-A to lubricate the latch.
If I understand you right the door is opened and won't close because the latch is tripped. Lift up on the door handle and take your finger or a screw driver and move the latch to the open position
Roll down the window, reach outside, and lift the door latch or lever.
if the door does not latch somtimes the latch has locked lift the door handle and pull latch open
The lift gate on a 2003 Dodge Durango can be opened from the inside if the latch is not working. There is a latch on the floor close to the door that can be tripped with the use of a screwdriver to open the gate. The cable for the gate might need to be repaired after this.
Make sure the door is unlocked then lift up on the handle. If it doesn't work the first time try a couple more times. If it still isn't open lift up on the handle and pry the latch with a flathead screwdriver.
The hook portion or the latch is probably flipped up. If you lift the exterior handle up and take a pen or reasonable facsimile, you can flip it back. Post your results. Should someone "accidently" push down the latch, which freezes, the door won't latch or close. Pulling the outside door handle and using the pen or straight tool at the same time will release all latches!! If the latch is flipped down, as it was on my 2000 Pontiac Firebird, then simply lifting the inner or outer latch handle may not work. My car has power door locks and I could not get the latch to release no matter how many times I cycled the lock/unlock switch. I found that I had to unlock the door with the key first, then lifting the handle worked! I don't know how the latch got "thrown" initially, but I found the seatbelt buckle stuck in the doorjamb, and I had locked the car using the keychain fob. My point is this: It will help to try and figure out what was occurring when the problem might have happened. , and Good Luck!
Remove perimeter trim panel around inside door latch held in by 5 friction clips (pop out w/screw driver. Remove inside door trim panel held on by plastic T clips (just pull and lift up). Drill out 4 pop rivets holding window mechanism. remove clips holding ends of door latch linkage rod. Remove inside 12mm bolt left side of handle and then the 12mm bolt inside door jamb area. Take out 3 torx screws holding door latch assembly, and slide the latch and door handle assembly up enough so that the linkage rod clip to the back of the lock assemble can be removed. The handle assemble can noe be pulled out and replaced - takes about an hour.
The screws are around the door handle and the door latch pop out the plastic behind the latch their may be a screw underneath the door panel and lift the window switch cover out from the bottom next to the handle striaght up off the metal clip slide it through the door then just pop it off the retainers
Check the hinges on the door. They probably need replacing. Open the door and then lift it and see if there is free play in the hinges. There should not be. The latch itself is adjustable so if it is only slightly off, you may be able to adjust it enough so it will latch. You will need to loosen the latch and adjust it even if you replace the hinges.
