If I understand you correctly, this is still in the car, you have just removed the bolts that hold the tranny to the engine. Well I can't speak for a Cavalier, but normally I would expect there to be a drive shaft from the engine that sits in a splined collar inside the tranny. That's how the power (such as it is) gets to the transmission, so even with the bolts out you still have to find a way of drawing the transmission away from this big splined shaft, and I think it's a transverse-mounted unit, so I doubt there's room. Maybe you should have pulled the whole thing and split it on a bench. Even having the bolts out doesn't mean this casing is going to open without some pounding and a couple cans of Liquid Wrench

Changing the clutch on a 1999 Chevy Cavalier requires remove of the transmission. Once the unit is dropped. Access and loosen the flywheel bolts. Then remove the clutch dish bolts. Pull the clutch off. Installation and reversal of the removal, just be sure the properly bleed the clutch system.
