Why won't the clutch housing drop after it's unbolted from a 1995 Chevy cavalier?

If I understand you correctly, this is still in the car, you have just removed the bolts that hold the tranny to the engine. Well I can't speak for a Cavalier, but normally I would expect there to be a drive shaft from the engine that sits in a splined collar inside the tranny. That's how the power (such as it is) gets to the transmission, so even with the bolts out you still have to find a way of drawing the transmission away from this big splined shaft, and I think it's a transverse-mounted unit, so I doubt there's room. Maybe you should have pulled the whole thing and split it on a bench. Even having the bolts out doesn't mean this casing is going to open without some pounding and a couple cans of Liquid Wrench
