There could be three reasons that the radiator fans do not come on.
- The fan motor itself has failed. This can be tested by connecting power directly from the negative and positive cables of the battery to the corresponding connectors on the fan wire.
- The temperature sensor has failed. This is located at the bottom driver's side of the radiator. The sensor is round with a large hex head. It screws directly into the radiator. You can follow the wires from the fans to the sensor.
- You car does not have enough coolant to fill the radiator to the level of the sensor. (This is unlikely and you would most certainly notice other problems!)

not very difficult at all. i have replaced the entire radiator in my 97. my favorite place to go is to the junkyard...nicest thing about VDubs is the way you can swap parts between models. what you are looking for can most likely come off of any Jetta 93-98 or possibly Passat from the same years.
