Because the spark plug must fire when the piston is at top dead centre of a compression stroke. If the plug fires when the piston is at any other position then you get backfiring etc and no start.
The correct firing order ensures the plugs fire at the right time.
You MIGHT have a cracked distributor cap and the spark is jumping to the wrong plug along moisture trails.
what is wrong when the truck just turn over and want start.
the firing order is (1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8) i seeen the timing on 69 ford motor now i need to see the block and distubritor pics would help a lot more to replace all this i have a ford motor that well not run i no nothing about what might be wrong with it exept timing it has points the motor is in a 1978 f 150 looks like a 390 may not original motor for truck thank you

The firing order for all Chevy 350's is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 The firing order for all 305's is 1-8-7-2-6-5-4-3 Wrong. The firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 for all Gen I and Gen II V8 is the same.
No, the firing order is wrong, you'll have to redo it Again there is no mention of which engine you are referring to. So go here: http://autorepair.about.com/library/firing_orders/bl-ford-firing-85.htm Pick the correct engine and you will see the correct plug wire routing.
3100 V6 -- The firing order is 1-2-3-4-5-6. I know it seems wrong but that's what it is if you have a 3100 V6.4 Cylinder -- The firing order is 1-3-4-2.
The engine , if it runs at all , will , of course , have misfires and may have a 'backfire' .
It depends on what is wrong - if the starter-motor does not operate it is probably a flat battery (charge it), starter relay (replace it) or starter motor (replace it) - always check for corrosion / bad earths. If the starter-motor is operating but the engine isn't firing it could be any number of things - but for a motor to run it must have: compression, fuel & ignition. The easy answer if your bike does not start is to get in touch with a recovery organisation or motorcycle dealer (such as ourselves: http://www.aprilia-merseyside.com )
all spark plug gaps are wrong ( dont always they set correct from factory) or you have got the plug lead positions wrong firing order 1-3-4-2
The engine will turn over , but either run poorly or not at all
Bad plug wires or distributor cap is tracking and firing cylinders in wrong order
