I have a 2001 Excursion Limited. It should be identical to the 2002. Just to the right of the headlight switch should be what I call a roller switch. It just rolls up and down. To dim them, just roll it downward. It will also turn on your convenience lights when rolled all the way upward.

Usually means that all doors (including rear hatch) are not closed securely.
Try turning on the button on the left of the ceiling console. Had the same prob myself.

On the interior lights for the back seats, there is a switch. When you turn the switch to "Door" mode it will make the lights turn on when the door is opened.
