The solenoid (aka Starter Relay) on the Passenger Fender, could be defective.
The ignition switch could be faulty.
The Neutral Safety Switch (Automatic Transmissions) or the Clutch depressed switch are disconnected, or broken.
On vehicles with EEC-IV there can be a problem with the PCM module, usually located under the glove box and behind the right kick panel.
Start replacing the 2000 s10 alternator by disconnecting the battery. Remove the air inlet hose, and the serpentine belt. Take off the bracket over the alternator if it has one. Unbolt the alternator and disconnect the wires. Reverse the procedure to install the new alternator.
With the car or truck running disconnect only the positive side of the battery ... if it stays running that means the alternator is good if it dies then it needs replacing
