Hearst was a rich (make that very rich), influential (make that exceedingly influential) and powerful (make that very, very powerful) newspaper magnate. He owned so many US newspapers, that he was able to sway public opinion and eventually caused the call for war with Spain. After the war, When Roosevelt became President, he got the reputation of being a "trustbuster" and, as Hearst in effect ran a trust with the control of his newspapers, TR was not on Hearst's Best Friends list.
TR was also known as a man who considered honesty not only as a virtue, but considered it to be an essential element of public discourse. Yellow Journalism made a specialty out of bendingthe truth, but also of breaking it asunder and trampling it on the ground.
