Why would a 1998 sunfire start running poorly around 75 miles an hour you changed the thermostat but up around 75 it runs very cool and sputters if i go any faster?

There are many reasons as to why a Sunfire may be running hot. Most likely the car is running low on coolant, or other fluids.

This is a fairly direct job. Now, having said that, I haven't changed a thermostat in many years, and I've never changed the one in my Sunfire. So, take my comments as advisory at best. The Sunfires have mounted the thermostats in two places that I know of. Where yours is depends on the year and which engine you have. I recommend you pick up a Haynes or Chilton manual. I had this same problem with my 1996 Sunfire awhile ago. I took it to two mechanics and they both determined that it was a leaking head gasket and it was causing air to get trapped in the thermostat to make it run hot. Hope this helps you out. Good luck.
