how do you know when thermostat is bad in 19997 Pontiac sunfire
check to see if the thermostat is hung open or your temperature sensor for your fan is out and causing your fan on your radiator to run continuously when key is on.
thermostat? engine size?
check this site------>
Off the water pump
is the vehicle over heating?changed the thermostat? or water pump may be gone,is it leaking by the pump?
There are many reasons as to why a Sunfire may be running hot. Most likely the car is running low on coolant, or other fluids.
This is a fairly direct job. Now, having said that, I haven't changed a thermostat in many years, and I've never changed the one in my Sunfire. So, take my comments as advisory at best. The Sunfires have mounted the thermostats in two places that I know of. Where yours is depends on the year and which engine you have. I recommend you pick up a Haynes or Chilton manual. It will tell and show you most everything you need to know. FriPilot
It is in the lower radiator hose
I had this same problem with my 1996 Sunfire awhile ago. I took it to two mechanics and they both determined that it was a leaking head gasket and it was causing air to get trapped in the thermostat to make it run hot. Hope this helps you out. Good luck.
Start at the radiator and follow the upper rad hose to the engine. The hose connects to the thermostat housing. The thermostat is located in this housing.
