Perhaps it was hit by a meteorite.

There are several things that can cause your 1998 Chevy to randomly die out. The most common cause is a malfunctioning fuel pump.

check for a vaccum leak on your throttlebody. have solenoid on transmission checked I had same problem cost about 125.00 to have mechanic fix
Lots of reasons, but mine was the fuel pump was bad. It would overheat after driving maybe 15 minutes, then I would let the car stop for an hour or two and it would start back up.
