Why would a engine in a 1997 expedition sound like something inside the enegine broke loose and was rattling around and oil start running out of it?

Because maybe something inside the engine did break loose. For example lifters, rods, pistons, exc. too many things to list that may have broken loose. You may need a new or used engine or rebuilt old engine.
