It could be a bad starter relay, faulty wire(s)/switch(s) and/or dirty connections. I would check the starter relay and connections first. If everything else checks out, it just might be the starter itself.
open the hood, look down between the rad. and the engine. There it is.
if the starter is good , then its possible. do you know how to do it?
The starter solenoid is on the left side fenderwell next to the battery.
Mercury Topaz was created in 1983.
90" topaz mercury is getting hot and shut off and the starts when it cool off.? what is the cause of this and how do i fix it?
Just look under the front of the car, just behind the rad. And there it is, if it is a 4cyl of course?
Disconnect the battery. The vehicle will probably have to be raised to reach the starter. The starter has two or three bolts holding it in, and wiring attached. Remove the wires remembering where to put them back. Remove the bolts and pull starter out.

Not quite sure what you are asking, but if you are changing the solenoid, then disconnect the battery first.
The 1994 Mercury Topaz has a chain and not a belt.
A 1991 mercury topaz has drum brakes on the rear wheels.
