because its healthy
Physical fitness and exercise varies by person and exercise program. To perform physical fitness a person would be doing an activity where their heart rate is elevated.
It always helps to the person well-being, as well as giving them something to do now that they have a lot of spare time. The exercise chosen should be moderate and according to the person's strength and possibility.
To keep active, stay in shape, and live longer and healthier. The body is a machine and it will atrophy if it has nothing to do. Retired people should slow down perhaps, but not stop.
The primary reason is that the person's calorie consumption is not equaling to the person's calorie requirement for physical activity.
Vigorous
You would call them veteran!
A long bike ride that is partially uphill be would be considered vigorous physical activity.

In speaking to the officer you would address them by their rank and name. In writing to the person you would follow the rank with the word "Retired" or "Ret."
If a person exercises for 2-3 hours a day, he would require more energy compared to a guy who doesn't exercise. This is because. the more exercise/physical activity you do, the increased amount of energy you use. Therefore, your body would need to replenish that used energy. This is done by increasing his/hers daily energy needs. A person who doesn't exercise would have a lower energy need as they don't use that much energy compared to an athlete.
