Why would a side airbag on a 2007 Ford Focus deploy while in the process of being driven on a highway -- any mechanics out there to answer this one?

One possibility could be, it was the Airbag sensor's 'threshold' was set to low from the manufacture.
Another possibility, the sensor's 'threshold' had deteriorated over time due to environmental and/or driving conditions.
