I had a similar problem on a couple of different autos. Don't have a wiring diagram in front of me but it could be the same.Check for a resistor from power (+12v) to the positive side of the coil. There is probably two wires to the coil plus side. One from the key switch for starting (no resistor), and the other from +12v (dropping thru the resistor) for normal running.Hope it helps.
P.S. The resistor could be in a number of forms. ie. a resistor terminal on the post, a resistor wire, or a box on the firewall.
