First world countries or regions that are earthquake prone tend to have very strict building regulations so that earthquake resistant designs and construction techniques are employed in the design and construction of buildings and other infrastructure. These regulations are also strictly enforced. Countries where earthquake are rare are unlikely to require the results of seismic activity to be considered in the design and construction process (except in the most sensitive of buildings e.g. nuclear reactors) as this is more expensive and is considered to not be a significant enough risk to warrant the additional expense.

As such in the unlikely event that a large earthquake did occur in the country where they were rare, it would do significantly more damage as the structures were not designed to withstand earthquakes.

Also earthquake prone regions will have an emergency response prepared in the event of a major earthquake that will be well practised. The emergency response in a country with low earthquake risk will be less well prepared as they will concentrate their training on dealing with other more likely scenarios.

How serious is a earthquake?

Earthquakes come in a wide variety of severity. A mild earthquake (let us say a 3.0 on the scale) may do no damage at all, and is just a curiosity. A severe earthquake (possibly 7 or above) can cause enormous amounts of death and destruction.

Will England experience earthquakes?

England frequently experiences earthquakes but fortunately they are not usually serious. The strongest recorded earthquake in recent years was the 2008 Lincolnshire earthquake. The Quake reached a magnitude of 5.2 on the Richtor scale and was felt as wide as Northern Ireland to the west and the Netherlands to the East. The quake caused structural damage to hundreds of buildings but fortunately there was only one minor injury.

When will the next earthquake hit?

If you are referring to real earthquakes (I noticed the question is posted in "Pokemon" and I don't know if there are special Pokemon earthquakes)...but anyway, real earthquakes happen frequently. Sussex, New Brunswick, Canada had a small/medium earthquake just 2 days ago (Feb. 05, 2010) that registered 3.2 on the Richter Scale - just a few tenths of a point below the level that could have caused serious damage. Tremors of this type are fairly common around the world.

What are facts about earthquakes?

What is the most widely used measurement for earthquakes?

To measure earthquakes scientists use a machine called a seismometer. The answers are made public by using the Richter scale, which is a logarithmic scale ie an earthquake with a reading of 5 is 10 times worse than one with a reading of 4. A reading of up to 5 on the Richter scale is not too serious. A bit of shaking. A reading of 8 means serious damage A reading of 10 is a national disaster.
