Play scripts are in demand by actors, and writers who like to write plays, and who are good at it, fill that demand. Theatre audiences are always interested in something new; they don't want to watch the same old thing over and over. It's just like movie audiences (and each movie has its own script--a screenplay--also written by an author.)
