Check your ambient light sensor. In American vehicles I have only seen the sensor on top of the dashboard. It looks like a little bubble sticking up.

No, it's not normal. Some 2003 Vibe's have automatic headlights triggered by a light sensor. If you leave the headlight switch in the middle setting between "on" and "off" they will come on by themselves when it's dark. If you turn them off the daytime running lights will still come on and the high beams will still work but the headlights won't come on automatically at night.
