The chief justice has a pool of individuals in which to respond to for his actions as with the vice president, short of an act of congress, would be considered biased in his decision for impeachment.

The main reason is that the president is the head of the executive branch of government while the Chief Justice is the head of the judicial branch of government. Nothing short of having one head of a separate branch of government preside over the possible removal of the head of another branch of government would legitimize such a removal.

The correlation between two heads of government in this regard is apparent when one notes that the Chief Justice is required to preside at impeachment trials only when the president is tried. When lower federal officials are tried, some other presiding officer of the Senate (i.e., the Vice President, President pro tempore or other designated officer) presides over the trial.

2 impeached presidents?

Impeachment actions were brought against two American presidents. First, Andrew Johnson was impeached due to firing a member of his cabinet without the proper protocol. President Bill Clinton was impeached for obstruction of justice and perjury connected to a sexual relationship with an intern. In both cases, the presidents fell short of the vote needed to complete the Impeachment action.

Does the vice-president always acts as judge in an impeachment trial?

As President of the Senate, the U.S. Vice President presides over most impeachment trials. However, Article I, Section 3, Clause 6 of the U.S. Constitution specifies that when the President is on trial the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court presides. And although the Constitution doesn't say, I assume that would also be the case if the Vice President were the defendant in an impeachment trial (an incumbent U.S. Vice President has never been impeached to date).

What tool does the legislative branch have to remove the president or a supreme court justice?

The Vice-President does not preside at an impeachment of a President. The Constitution requires that the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court preside over an impeachment trial.

What role does the supreme court play in impeachment trials?

The Supreme Court plays no role in impeachment trials. However, in the impeachment trial of the President of the United States, the Chief Justice of the United States serves as presiding officer of the Senate since it would be a conflict of interest to have the vice president presiding over a trial at which he would become President if the current President were to be found guilty.

What is the act by which the congress accuses a president or supreme court justice of serious crimes?

Articles of impeachment must be passed by?

The articles of impeachment must be passed by a majority of the House of Representatives. The Senate then tries the impeached person and votes on their conviction. If two-thirds of the Senate votes on the person's conviction, they are convicted. Normally, in these trials, the Vice Presidents presides. However, in a case of the President being tried, the Chief Justice resides over the trial. This is because it is hard for a Vice President not to be biased if the conviction of the President means he will become the new President.
