Why would kitchen sink backup in winter months?

Because the kitchen drain is freezing up in cold weather. Open the doors under the sink at night to allow warmer air to enter to help prevent this. Also cover any exposed drain lines under the house with insulation or a heat tape to minimize the chance of freezeups.
