Colonists who had holdings in land or other kinds of wealth, might have opposed the Revolution, because if the Revolution were unsuccesssful, they risked at the very least confiscation of their property and money. Some loyalists had businesses that needed British protection from foreign forces and pirates. Some colonists needed British protection to prevent other countries like Spain and even France from encroaching on their lands. In addition, many loyalist colonists simply preferred to be part of the British empire, the strongest empire on Earth at the time. They thought the british would win it they had a war. They were wealthy, so taxes did not matter. "If you disobey the king, you didsbey God."

What reasons might loyalists have had to support Great Britain? Those who chose to stay with Britain, the Loyalists, did not consider unfair taxes and regulations good reasons for rebellion. Some remained loyal to the king because they were officeholders who would lose their positions as a result of the Revolution. Others were people who lived in relative isolation and who had not been part of the wave of discontent that turned so many Americans against Britain.

During the American Revolutionary Period, particularly after 1783, loyalists from the fledgling United States of America often started new lives in either Great Britain itself or the British colonies that would later become the nation of Canada. It should be noted that not all loyalists chose to leave America, but those who did typically found refuge in areas that remained under the control of the 'mother-country' of Great Britain.
