the simple answer to this is that he wants to remember you, you are not a bad memory to him and he's probably finding it difficult to let go of you. Did you wear the sweatpants often? if he wants to remember you then he will probably be open to the option of being friends if that helps.
all break-ups are difficult so he will be finding it hard to move on and let go for a while. he will soon be back to normal.
