Either the sending unit in the tank quit, orthe fuse blew, if the gauge is at the extreme empty or full, that could be a faulty ground somewhere on the system

It's not fused separately. If your fuel gauge isn't working, you either have faulty wiring to the gauge, or a faulty fuel sending unit.
my 1998 frontier has about a 13.5 tank, I have never ran it out of gas though. It's range seems to be around 330 miles

if you are refering to the sensor for the fuel gauge, it is in the fuel tank with the fuel pump.
