It shows that there is a problem with the transmission. Just like the check engine light, the overdrive light has codes that tell you what is wrong with the transmission and the various components connected with it.

On a Toyota Camry, the overdrive button will be located either on or near the shifter. It will read 'overdrive' or 'O/D.'

User Avatar

overdrive button is located on gear shifter on automatice transmission.

User Avatar

OD means Overdrive. The light is on because you have disengaged the Overdrive. The button is on the shift lever on the side. Push that button to engage the overdrive.

It's not recommended to use overdrive on a constant base. It stresses too much the engine as well as transmission.

There is no "switch". To cancel overdrive move the gear lever from "D" to "4".

There is an electrical failure in the trans and will have to be checked out by a good trans shop. GoodluckJoe

There are two, both inside the gearbox

I was told that it is the temp sensor. The car needs to be at 150 degrees. I am working on the same problem.

User Avatar

no you don't have to drive with overdrive on permanently, but you will change gear quicker and less smoothly, also your fuel consumption will increase by as much as 50%.

User Avatar

You have to use it when you are driving in mountain areas where to have high speed is not a good idea. The overdrive function does allow the transmission to switch to higher gears.

mabye u need to make a gear adjustment

Its near the gear....a button with ECT written on it...

its on the shift lever of my dx where your thumb hits the lever

User Avatar

Forget the light. Listen to the motor and/or look at the tachometer. When the overdrive is engaged, the motor will run slower at the same speed. The slower the motor runs at any speed, the better gas milage you get.

User Avatar

My friends car did the same exact thing. It could be your transmission sensor. I am not exactly sure what the sensor is called but it has to do with the way it shifts. Overdrive sensor maybe?

User Avatar

It allows the car to operate at lower revs making for a smoother drive and better fuel consumption at higher speeds. The gearbox will shift into overdrive itself, so it is always best to have it switched on in normal driving conditions. You only need to switch off the overdrive when you need greater engine braking or are towing a heavy load.

User Avatar

You can find it on the transmission switcher on the driver's side. Usually it's written on "O/D".

User Avatar

Yes, the only way to turn it off is to engage the manual shift on the auto stick.

User Avatar

The little red button on the driver side is for overdrive.

It take 1 littre to travel about 26km by a new vits 2010.

User Avatar

yes it is. notice that when u engage the overdrive before 60km/h, almost nothing happens but at 60km/h, the rpm drops as the vehicle attains bigger momentum.
