Why would the Peugeot screen washer system 306 hdi estate intermittently spray the rear tailgate instead of the front screen?

O.K. - I'll answer my own question! After asking around the garages, I was advised to check out the switch. Awkward job to remove it from the steering column but it checked out O.K. A new washer pump cured the problem - presumably a sticky valve was the real cause, but the unit is sealed.
