This is most likely the clock spring in the steering column. Chrysler had a recall on incorrectly wound clock springs. I would recommend taking it to a Chrysler dealer for confirmation.

You have a malfunction in the air bag system. The air bag system is inoperable when light is on. Take it to a qualified mechanic for repair.
I just had a warranty repair for an airbag indicator light malfunction on my 2005 Chrysler Town and Country. The service persons said it may be possible the airbag would not function properly in an accident if not corrected. They diagnosed the problem to be in a seatbelt sensor that is tied into the airbag system. The ordered part was installed on 9/19/08 and everything appears to be okay now.
The airbag light would have nothing to do with emissions. If they are doing a safety inspection, it would fail.
You would have to take it to a Ford dealership so they could diagnose why the airbag light is on. It is not something that you would want to do yourself.
There is not much chance that your airbag would malfunction and just deploy, but if the airbag light is on there is a 100% chance that it will not operate properly in the event of an accident. You need to have the car inspected at a dealer or certified repair shop if the airbag light is on and remains on.
If the fuse is still good, does youre airbag light stay on, and the crusie control is out too? I would believe it is the "Clocking spring" that needs to be replaced! I know,... you're saying what is a clocking spring? All I know is it located in your steering wheel just under your deployable airbag. We had ours replaced by a factory recall. Look it up, it's still at NO COST to you. It's a Chrysler recall. (its a clock spring, and it is a air bag safety feature, that will prevent the airbag from going off. If your airbag light is on, take to certified repair facility asap. it may mean it wont fire in crash, but it could be a lot worse, if it is covered by recall, take advantage of it)
There are pages of codes for the airbag system. You need to have it checked for codes by a qualified mechanic as airbag systems are not a do it yourself system.
A 1998 Chrysler Town and Country would have a 3.8L V6. That engine has a timing chain not a belt.A 1998 Chrysler Town and Country would have a 3.8L V6. That engine has a timing chain not a belt.
if your airbag light is on it tells that something is wrong with the module, sensors, or clock spring..in order to find out what is the problem you would have to pay for the diagnostic, usually they charge about 70$. After they replaced they have to reset the airbag light. I would've buy one of those airbag reset tools online for about 50-100$ and do it myself saving hundreds.
