You can never know for certain what' is wrong until you plug in a simple device known as a "code scanner." Code scanners are simple to operate and if you don't feel that you can afford one, visit your local auto parts retailer and most will help you figure out what's wrong.
There are pages and pages of things that can turn on the check engine light. You need to have it checked fro codes with a scan tool. You can then dignose the cause of the code.
