Why would the engine temp go up and the battery charge go down when ac is on?

Your AC works off the engine's electrics and is very power hungry, therefore the amount going in to charge the battery is reduced, it also makes the engine work harder so it gets hotter - if all is maintained well there should be no problems, but make sure you don't spend all day driving slowly !
