What is the history of the Distinguished Service Cross?

The Distinguished Service Cross was first awarded during World War I for actions during that war and recent actions. It was established by President Woodrow Wilson on January 2, 1918. General Pershing, Commander-in-Chief of the Expeditionary Forces in France, had recommended that recognition other than the Medal of Honor, be authorized for the Armed Forces of the United States for valorous service rendered, in like manner, to that awarded by the European Armies. The request for establishment of the medal was forwarded from the Secretary of War to the President in a letter dated December 28, 1917. The Act of Congress establishing this award (193-65th Congress) dated July 9, 1918 is contained in 10 U.S.C. § 3742. The establishment of the Distinguished Service Cross was promulgated in War Department General Order No. 6, dated January 12, 1918. The first design of the Distinguished Service Cross was cast and manufactured by the United States Mint at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The die was cast from the approved design prepared by Captain Aymar E. Embury II, Engineers Officer Reserve Corps. Upon examination of the first medals struck at the Mint, it was considered advisable to make certain minor changes to add to the beauty and the attractiveness of the medal. Due to the importance of the time element involved in furnishing the decorations to General Pershing, one hundred of the medals were struck from the original design and numbered 1 to 100. These medals were furnished with the provision that these crosses be replaced when the supply of the second design was accomplished which would also be numbered 1 to 100.

What does world war 2 distinguished unit badge go 36 HQ wd 44 mean?

The Distinguished Unit Badge was something new for World War Two. It was awarded to all members of the unit, when that unit had performed to such a high standard that if it were a single soldier, the soldier would be entitled to the Distinguished Service Cross. This is a high standard indeed. The only award higher than a Distinguished Service Cross is the Medal of Honor. The badge itself was a plain dark blue enameled rectangle of metal. It was worn over the right pocket on the chest - the opposite side from where all other badges and ribbons ("fruit salad") was worn. "go 36 hq wd 44" means General Order Number 36 of the Headquarters, War Department, 1944. This was the order from the War Department which recognized the particular unit in question and awarded the badge. During WWII there was still a War Department and a Navy Department; the two were not combined into the Department of Defense until 1947. Today the Distinguished Unit Badge has been replaced by the Presidential Unit Citation.

When would someone be awarded a George Cross?

According to Wikipedia the Free Online Encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Cross); The George Cross (GC) is the highest civil decoration of the United Kingdom, and also holds, or has held, that status in many of the other countries of the Commonwealth of Nations. The GC is the civilian counterpart of the Victoria Cross (VC) and the highest gallantry award for civilians as well as for military personnel in actions which are not in the face of the enemy or for which purely military honours would not normally be granted. The George Cross, which may be awarded posthumously, is granted in recognition of "acts of the greatest heroism or of the most conspicuous courage in circumstances of extreme danger." The cross is primarily a civilian award; however the George Cross may be awarded to military personnel for gallant conduct which is not in the face of the enemy. As the Warrant states: The Cross is intended primarily for civilians and award in Our military services is to be confined to actions for which purely military Honours are not normally granted.
