This could be caused by a number of things. The timing chain could be bad and jumped a tooth on the gear causing the plugs to fire at the wrong time. The distributor cap and rotor could be bad causing the spark to jump to another contact and fire out of order. When spark plug wires get old and/or wet, the high voltage they carry can leak out and either ground to the motor or jump to another wire. And fiinally, if you have just replaced any of these parts, you could have put the wires back in the wrong place.
