Lots of reasons . . . but ALL Altima's all have cam chains, no timing belt.
1. out of fuel? or fuel pump stopped?
2. is the battery dead? supposed to be over 12.3 volts with engine off, doors closed, key out. if dead is the alternator charging? bad grounds?
3. check all fuses and relays.
4. did you lose enough coolant to cause the engine to overheat enough to blow the head gasket? (Split hose, already blown head gasket, cracked radiator, cracked heater core or control valve are possible causes for coolant loss.)
5. cyl head temperature sensor failure can cause a no run, but almost no other sensor or component on the engine can cause a stall/no run condition.
6. Mis fueled? (contaminated or diesel fuel added by mistake?
7. failed ignition coil? Not common but could be. Coil is usually the last thing to suspect.
No disrespect meant for prior posters to answer.
All their ideas are included.
Hope this link helps: http://www.trustmymechanic.com/auto-repair/22/1994-nissan-altima-engine-dies-while-driving-but-restarts-ok.html
It might have run out of gas.
I have a 2003 Altima that while traveling under 35 mph might shut down. Nissan says it is the crank shaft angle sensor thingy. Nissan will repair for $215.00 or your local mech. will do it for $191.00...KNOWN problem but no recall!
You can fit it, but it will effect your driving. while turning it will tough tha malguards.
Oil in the distributor.
I have a 2005 Nissan altima and it use to do that until I replaced the crankshaft and camshaft sensors, have not had that problem since. The crankshaft sensor is real easy to replace. The camshaft is a little more difficult but can be done, I would recommend you trying it yourself. The sensors I got from autozone and paid about $35 a piece and safe a lot in labor charges.
The 2005 Nissan Altima auto tensioner pulley can be removed by removing the center bolt. You will need to hold the pulley stationary while you loosen the bolt.
the squeeling noise is from the fan belt either the belt needs renewing, or the a/c compressor clutch is not operating correctly
A 2009 Altima ranges from 23 to 32 miles per gallon, while a 2010 Nissan Altima V6 gets between 18 MPG (city) to 27 MPG (highway). The 2010 Altima Hybrid's mileage per gallon goes from 42 to 36. The 4-cylinder 2010 Nissan Altima gets 23 city MPG and 32 highway MPG. The Altima hybrid gets 35 city MPG and 33 highway MPG. The Altima's start at $19,900.
check distributer i had the same problem oil got into the distributer and messed it up whenever i went to a like 3 rpm then the car wouldn't run after sputtering for awhile
Bring to a shop that has an ABS scanner to determine the problem
If it's stalling while driving, it could be the problem with either the crankshaft positioning sensor or mass air flow sensor. Check to see if you have a check engine light on. If so, you need to retrieve the code from auto parts store. Only then you will be able to find out the actual problem.
