Anything that interrupts the computer's defragmenting process will cause it to start over again. This means any program that is running in the background that accesses the disk while defrag is running will do it. The best way to deal with this is to start your computer in Safe Mode, stop all your services and background applications, and then run the defrag again.

It is a lot easier to just stop programs like screen saver, and automatic retrieval of emails before starting to defrag the hard drive. These are usually the applications that make the disk defragment start over time and again.
AnswerAt that point I would try what the contributor said above, but if it didn't work, at that point I would just back up all your files that you want and then format your hard drive, reinstalling Windows. Reinstalling an OS is the simplest way to get rid of persistent problems: all you need is the legitimate copy and your backed-up files! btw: you'll have a clean slate!
Keep those restore discs! If your PC didn't come with them, then you should be able to make them. It varies with every manufacturer, but you will need several CDs or 2-3 DVDs in general.
