I had the same problem, in searching the internet I've found lots of people that reported this same problem. The head unit (stock) still works fine, the light comes on, I can scan for radio stations, CDs act like they are playing, etc. but no sound come out at any volume. There is no mute. The radio fuse is located in the fuse box below and to the left of the steering wheel, at the back of the storage compartment behind a plastic cover that says "fuse" on it. The one related to the radio is labeled "ACC" on the sticker on the plastic panel. But this fuse is not broken. I checked all the fuses, none are broken.
The problem turned out to be a short in the rear speaker wiring. This is common because Toyota puts very cheap speakers back there with flimsy wiring that also hangs down into the top of the trunk space - if a bag, box, stroller, etc. bangs into it, the wiring can easily short out.
You can temporarily disconnect the rear speakers if damage is obvious, and tape up the wires to prevent the short. Replacing them is a good solution, not very difficult or expensive. They are 6x9 oval size.
Try to use Toyota speaker adapter plugs so you don't need to cut wires and mess the electric system up. You can get them from Ebay or Amazon. Most likely one of the speakers has a loose wire that is contacting some metal in the car, check each speaker and I'm sure you'll find the problem.
The speakers in a 2001 Toyota Echo measure 4 inches in the dash, 6 1/2 inches in the front door, and 6 inches by 9 inches in the rear deck. The car may not have dash speakers, as they weren't a mandatory option.
I have a 2001 Toyota Corlla Sport and all four of the speakers are 6 1/2" (two in the front doors and two in the rear deck) I have a 2001 Toyota Corlla Sport and all four of the speakers are 6 1/2" (two in the front doors and two in the rear deck) Try to use Toyota speaker adapter plugs so you don't need to cut wires and mess the electric system up. Would a Toyota tundra 2003 rims fit on a 2001 dodge durango
I guess the answer depends upon what you mean by "stop working". I have a 2001 ECHO with a radio that stopped producing sound a few years ago. The display still indicated that both the AM/FM tuner and the CD were working in every way; just didn't get any sound. Turned out one of the speaker wires in the rear deck became detached. Since the back of the speakers are exposed to the trunk, it's easy to knock the wires off when loading grocery bags. Took me a while to figure this out because the car has four speakers; it never occurred to me that one wire coming loose would cause all four speakers to stop working. However, reconnecting that one wire solved my problem. Hope your problem is that simple.
