broken cable that's all 20 bucks
Ive had 13 tauruses from1996 to2005 I repair transmissions for a living, I could be wrong but I don't think so... Ive never seen a speedo cable on these cars. Speed control is monitored electronically via speed sensor, sometimes more than one,MLP switches, wires, and such... cable??? NAHH. more often than not on this car {Taurus-sable}its a speed sensor. Its between motor and firewall. Oh yea its tons of fun to get to. enjoy and good luck.
And the sensor is the vehicle speed sensor

Probably the VSS or equivalent (vehicle speed sensor) It might be called different things by different manufacturers.
Most likely a loose connection or bad sensor it is electronic
There is no such thing as an "odometer sensor." There is a vehicle speed sensor that is located on the output shaft housing of the transmission. That sends info to the speedometer. From there, the speedometer and the odometer are both operated internally, so if your speedo is working, but the odometer isn't, you have a problem inside the speedo head assembly.
Replace the speedo head assembly. It is a sealed unit, with no servicable parts. If the speedometer is working, then the cable and the speedo drive gears are working. The failure must be inside of the speedo head assembly itself.
It is non-servicable, so repair requires replacement of the speedometer/odometer assembly.
maybe the radio got broken when you put it in or the CD got stuck
It could be a problem with the speedometer assy, since the two are actually one unit. It could also be a speed sensor which is located in the transmission housing on the the right side output drive axle housing.
Either that, or the speedometer cable went bad.
Yes - the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) feeds the data to the speedometer, so if it goes bad, so does the speedometer, odometer, the transmission starts acting real funky, and a myriad of other symptoms. See "Related Questions" below for more about replacing the VSS
The speedometer is driven by the vehicle speed sensor. See "Related Questions" below for more about where to find it, and how to replace one.
Had the same problem off and on in my 1999 Taurus. The speedometer needs to be replaced. The problem is in the speedometer and not the transmission like I was initially led to believe. My mechanic said it wasn't that big of a repair.Coincidentally, the vehicle speed sensor feeds information to both the speedometer and the transmission....See "Related Questions" below for more

No, it does not. It's all electronic.
