Why are there two sonic booms when the space shuttle lands?

From NOVA: Because the Space Shuttle is so large (122 ft long), you will hear the sonic booms created by both the nose and tail shock waves (they occur about one-half second apart). All supersonic airplanes produce two sonic booms, but because they happen so close to each other, you hear them as one sound.

Y a-t-il un second bang supersonique aprs Mach 1 Is there a second sonic boom after Mach 1?

No, there is no second boom caused by an object going faster than mach 1 -- to mach 2, etc. A sonic boom is not an event. It is a pressure wave created by the supersonic object. You can think of it like the bow wave/wake created by a boat as it travels down a channel/river. If you are standing on the edge of the shore of the channel the wave will reach you at some time after the bow of the boat has passed, and it will reach someone else standing on the shore at another time. It is like an event when it reaches you, but it continues on and reaches the other person at a different time. Similarly, as the pressure wave reaches you, the sudden change in pressure causes you to hear the boom. If you were standing a hundred miles away near the path of the object the wave would reach you at a different time and that's when you would hear the boom, but the wave is moving continuously along with the supersonic object. If there were two supersonic objects moving one behind the other you would hear two booms. Also, large objects like the Space Shuttle and the Concord supersonic transport can cause two booms. They cause a void behind them, and the air rushing into this void can cause a second pressure wave. In this case you will hear two booms one after another.
