I=V/R, this is a most basic equation to use to understand what a resistor is and what it does, from the equation it can be seen that an increase of V, will result in an increase of I, also an increase of R will result in a decrease of I, because of that, resistors are used to reduce I so as to control the level of V in a circuit.
