They have already been driven out of the Republic. As for the other part of the island, the short answer is it is entirely up to the people of Northern Ireland. Under the conditions of the Anglo-Irish treaty N. Ireland will remain a part of the United Kingdom until the majority of the people of the six counties decide otherwise. The British government has stated several times that they have niether an economic or security interest in N. Ireland and they are free to separate from the the crown whenever they want. The matter has been voted on on several occasions but the majority of the people of N. Ireland have decided in favor of union with Britian. Once a vote is held and the majority favors separation then the British will remove themselves from N. Ireland. The odds of this happening anytime soon, however, are not very good. Even though their numbers seem to be dropping, Unionists still make up 58% of the Northern Ireland population.

Was Ireland an Axis power or an Allie power?

Why did religion cause disagreements between Ireland and British?

The Brits are Protestant and the Irish are Catholic. The British formed the Anglican Church of England and especially when Cromwell invaded Ireland and attempted a genocide of the Catholic Irish, these religious differences caused problems that have lasted between the two. The British took all of the land of the Catholics in Ireland and gave it to Protestants, which you can still see today (its called Northern Ireland, which is part of the UK).

Why did the Irish Republican Army continue to fight the British after most of Ireland became self governing in 1922?

The Irish Republican Army was formed to fight for an independent Irish Republic, which had been occupied by Britain for somewhere around 700 years. Finally, the British offered a treaty in which Ireland would become a Free State, with membership in the Commonwealth, and with loyalty sworn to the British monarch. Additionally, six counties in Ulster would remain British. The treaty passed with the people of Ireland, but met with strong opposition, particularly from the IRA. The Irish Free State Army was established as the official armed force of Ireland, while the IRA remained as an anti-treaty force. They fought each other in a civil war, with the Irish Free State being the victor in that dispute. Groups calling themselves IRA today really don't have as much in common with the IRA under Michael Collins as they claim to, but their declared intent is to force the British to capitulate the remaining six counties to Ireland. Additionally, most of them see the government of Ireland as illegitimate.
