4.0 liter EFI , V6 engine ( which is an Over Head Valve / pushrod design )
up to 1994 models
1995 and 1996
1997 to 2000
* also , starting with the 1995 model of Ford Explorer , the AUTOMATIC transmissions were ELECTRONICALLY controlled

It will not shift properly. The 1999 has an electronic governor and the 1994 has an hydraulic governor.

The transmissions from 1991 - 1994 are the same. So the 1991 transmission will not fit a 1996 explorer.
