The best answer for this question is "sometimes". A K&N will greatly improve air FLOW, which can improve milage under most conditions, along with an added boost in power. However, and I know this from first hand experience, if you are using a cold-air intake system with it (or ram air, as it is sometimes called), your mileage can suffer in winter months. Cold air is denser than warm air, and your MAF sensor will automatically increase the amount of fuel it sends to your engine to compensate for the additional air it reads. Long story short, I blocked off my cold air pipe for the winter, and my mileage improved somewhat, but not to what I had during the summer. So, it's a mixed blessing, but I found it was worth the change.

2005 XTerra, I own a 2004 XTerra and replaced the air filter with a K&N air filter (not the whole intake system, just the filter). It cost me about $50. This filter never has to be replaced, just cleaned out every 50,000 miles. It gave me an extra 1-2 mpg more and increased the horsepower a little. hope this helps you out. 2004 XTerra
change air filter if that doesn't work change gas filter
not so much an answr but direction. I believe it is the same as the 2003 so look at the answer for the 2003 expedition.
Fuel Filter Location The fuel filter is located along the frame rail under the vehicle and is accessible only from underneath the vehicle.
You may need to check your air filter. This may affect the way the vehicle performs, also air temperature will affect you. When it is colder you get better performance and you lower rpm's, thus better gas mileage.
