mine was so elongated at 190,000 miles, it jumped 3 teeth which resulted in all four intake valves getting bent, one piston got a chunk broke off of the outer edge. all four pistons had multiple light dents in them where the intake valves had hit. I replaced all valves, valve guide seals, pistons & rings , new timing chain, gears, guides, tensioner.

I choose an after market piston design that had proper oil ring drain holes. ( all the oil rings were stuck on the pistons like all the early original equipment no oil drain holes design ones eventually do. )

I lapped the exhaust valves to get rid of the slight exhaust valve seat pitting.

500 miles on it now and still full of oil now instead of a quart of oil and a spark plug or two every 100 miles. and no more piston rattle or timing chain noise at idle.

Do valves bend when timing belt breaks on 97 Saturn 1.9 motor?

There is no cam belt it is driven by a chain.

Will the valves get bent if timing chain breaks?

Unfortunately yes. The Saturn motor is considered an Interference motor. When the chain breaks the neutral landing position of the camshafts will allow valves to be open, as the engine slows down from its rotating mass it will bend these open valves.

Will the valves be bent if timing chain breaks on dodge 3.9?

Normally no.

Will the valves be damaged when the timing chain breaks on a 2000 Saturn?

Yes.The good news is, the timing chain seldom breaks; they aren't like the timing belts. You can typically just drive the vehicle until the engine is tired, then replace the timing chain, sprockets and tensioner slides while you're rebuilding the rest of the engine. The bad news is, anything is possible and a timing chain CAN break. The "L" series uses a timing belt for the V6 engine, but the 4 cylinder Saturn engines all use timing chains.

2000 Dodge durango 4.7 Dodge engine bend valves when the timing belt breaks?

First off the 4.7L uses a timing chain, not a belt. Second, it could bend valves if the chain breaks.

Will a 1976 Pontiac 455 cc engine bend valves if the timing chain breaks?

Did a lot of timing chain jobs on the Pontiacs back in the day, don't remember any of them bending valves.

What is the function of the timing chain in a Saturn Sl2?

the chain keeps the camshaft/valves in time with the crankshaft in order for combustion to take place

Does it mess the motor up when timing chain breaks on a Saturn SC1?

Yes, if the timing chain breaks a valve will hit a piston, causing significant internal damage. The good news is, the timing chain seldom breaks. The bad news is, if YOURS was one of the few that did break, the engine is toast.

Do you need a new engine if the timing chain breaks on your 1994 Ford Courier?

Damage is only done if the motor is an "interference" design. ie the valves and the pistons overlap in the same place, only kept from colliding by the timing chain. When the timing chain breaks on a interference design, valves and pistons smash together. If it's not an interference design, the pistons and valve won't come into contact if the timing chain breaks, so odds are no internal damage done.

Can the valve get bent when the timing chain breaks?

The Simple answer is yes the piston its the valves and possibly damage the pistons

When the timing chain goes bad does it take the valves with it?

This does depend on the engine design itself. If it is known as an interferance engine, then it is possible that the pistons can hit the valves if the chain breaks in operation.

What happens when a timing chain breaks on a 2000 Saturn 1.9 liter twin cam?

If a timing chain breaks the valves will no longer be synchronized with the pistons, meaning that one or more valves will be open when a piston reaches the top of its stroke. When that happens, we all know that two objects cannot occupy the same space at the same time, so either he piston will break the valve or the valve will shatter the piston. In short, a broken timing chain generally assures instant destruction of the engine; the extent of the destruction is not always the same, depending on several factors. HOWEVER... It should be noted that the timing chain on the 4 Saturn cylinder engines seldom fails. While a timing chain should be replaced when the engine is rebuilt, it is not considered necessary to replace the timing chain the way we need to replace timing belts.
