What causes the brake pedal to go soft?
A leak in the brake system. Fluid has leaked out and air is now in your lines. This can be from a brake cylinder at wheel or in master cylinder, or even worse a rusted brake line. Check and repair it NOW.
What if you can't get the air out of a brake system?
If you can't get the air out of your brake system get a professional to do it for you. If the professional cannot get out the air you probably have a more serious problem such as a leak in your brake lines or your master cylinder is broken in some form. Hope this helps

What is the proper way to bench bleed a master cylinder for a 1995 grand prix?
Before installing the master cylinder you do need to bench bleed it. Some brake master cylinders come with a bleeding kit to make bench bleeding the master cylinder easier, purchase a bench bleeding kit if yours did not come with one. The master cylinder bench bleeding kit consists of adapter fittings that screw into the master cylinder and tubes that attach to the fittings of the master cylinder. Place the master cylinder in a vise and attach the brake master cylinder bleeding kit routing the tubes into the master cylinder reservoir. While keeping the tubes submerged in brake fluid of ther reservoir, push the master cylinder piston in repeatedly using a screwdriver. You will see air traveling through the tubes into the reservoir by keeping the tubes in the fluid you are preventing air from re-entering the master cylinder when the piston returns. When there is no more air traveling through the tubes the master cylinder is ready to be installed. chek the brake fluid level at the master cylinder, if it is empty, then you have a probable leak and \or air in lines. If it is still full, then it's probably the seals on the piston inside the master brake cylinder.
What causes spongy brakes?
"Spongy" brakes on any car are an indicator of air in the brake system. The most common way for air to enter the ststem is if the brake lines are disassembled during brake repairs. If your brakes have not been serviced, the most likely explaination is that you have a leak somewhere and you have depleted the brake fluid in the master cylinder reservoir. ADDING MORE FLUID WILL NOT HELP. Once the fluid is depleted, the master cylinder pumps air into your system. Regardless of the source of the air, the system must be "bled" i.e. air sucked out of the lines. If you do not know why you lost brake fluid, find the leak and fix it first.

Why is it dangerous to let air get into brake pipes?
Air is easily compressed and the amount of fluid that must be pushed into the brake lines to transmit the force to the brakes increases greatly when air is present. Normally, the brake is activated by the brake pedal connected to the master cylinder. The master cylinder has a small piston that moves when you press on the brake pedal and that piston pushes brake fluid out of the cylinder and into the brake lines which ultimately causes brake fluid to flow to the wheel cylinders which them move and provide the force to press the brake pad against the disc or brake drum connected to the wheel. When there is air in the brake lines, the master cylinder pushed more fluid in than the amount of fluid that comes out at the wheel cylinders. This is because the air in the brake line is being compressed where in the normal situation there is essentially no compression of the brake fluid. Thus, to apply the same amount of force to the brake pads, the piston in the master cylinder has to move further. If there is a lot of air, then the piston has to move much further. If there is truly a large amount of air, then the piston in the master cylinder may move through its entire allowed distance and still not provide enough pressure to adequately press the brake pad against the frictional surface connected to the wheel. Three things to notice that decrease braking effectiveness and hence are dangerous. 1. Air in the lines gets compressed so that the amount of force creating friction at the wheels is less when compared to the same amount of mechanical movement of the brake mechanism. 2. The maximum amount of braking force is limited if the amount of air allows the piston in the master cylinder to travel its full length. 3. If you have air in the lines, it may be caused by a leak and more air may enter and further decrease braking effectiveness. Air in brake lines is usually a simple problem and easy to correct by "bleeding" the brakes.

yes u have 2 bleed new clutch master cylinded, u will do this at the slave cylinder , do it like u would bleeding brakes. usually 5 or six times is enough. if it takes u alot of bleeding u have a air leak.

Probably need a master cylinder, or you have a leak somewhere. Check the master by GENTLY pinching off the flow on all the flex hose and pump the brake pedal to see if you get a hard pedal. If you let the system run dry you could have air in the master and you will have to bleed the master at the lines connected to it.
