yes Yes, It will causes it to overheat. It can also crack the heads. The way to know for sure if the head gasket is gone is if there is water in your oil. And yes it will overheat!! may want to check your intake gasket. This also causes water in you oil and can make one over heat.
A used head gasket is not worth anything, because it cannot be reused.

Follow the top rad hose to the engine , There you will find the housing undo bolts , clean gasket on housing replace with new gasket and thermostat. Make sure engine is cool and drain anti-freeze first
