Yes it can.
Agreed. I had it happen to me on a Ford 390, the fuel pump is driven by an off set circle on the end of the camshaft, on the bigger gear driven by the timing chain that pushes a lever on the fuel pump. If the rubber diaphragm in the pump cracks or leaks for any reason it will begin to pump gasoline in to the crankcase.
Look inside the car above the fuel pump for an access panel. If there is none, you will have to drop the fuel tank to fix the leak if the leak is at the fuel pump. You need to determine exactly where it is leaking.
To replace the fuel pump, you have to drop the gas tank and the fuel pump is located right on the top of it. The fuel pump is not on top of the gas tank. It is a mechanical fuel pump and is bolted to the side of the engine block.
Usually these Chevrolets have an electric fuel pump which is located inside the gas tank. I don't think a 1988 has a mechanical pump. You have to remove the gas tank to do this job. vbd
Any of these or any 2 of these or all at once. 1) You run out of gas or fuel. 2) A pipe leak from the tank. 3) The fuel pump stops working because of a blockage or mechanical failure.
The fuel pump diaphragm has broken. Needs new fuel pump.
Probably not the tank but the fill tube, or fuel lines coming from the fuel pump
Yes
fuel pump if mechanical
There are two kinds of fuel pumps that your pickup can have, Mechanical, or Electric. More than likely you have a Mechanical, the Mechanical fuel pump is located on the side of the engine (pretty easy to replace), you can follow the fuel line from the fuel filter down to it, and just google an image of a mechanical fuel pump you will find it. If your fuel pump is Electrical it will be in the gas tank, or tanks if you have dual tanks. For Electrical, you will have to take off the fuel lines to the tank, unstrap it and remove it from the pickup to in order to remove the pump.
Fuel Leak. Possibly the Fuel Pump. Get it checked immediately.
Pump the fuel out with a mechanical hand pump. You do not have to remove the tank to replace the fuel pump as there is an access panel inside the vehicle just above the fuel pump.
In the gas tank. Since cars went from cabs to fuel injection the fuel pump went from a mechanical unit on the engine to one in the gas tank and so a nuisance to replace.
