Yes it will work Many people have done it, it is not A direct fit however, The knob will go on easily and you just need a hose clamp to hold it on, the boot is a bit more difficult.
I had to cut down my shift rod (I was going to anyway) and if you want to keep the chrome trim ring some modification to the console is needed too.
Just keep that in Mind, Maybe grab a junkyard shifter top for your console to practice on if you're nervous.
If you don't want to modify it remove the chrome ring from the shift boot and sew some elastic (available at fabric stores) into it and it will go on the console nicely and look alot like the stock one.

In South Africa, these were fitted to Golf (later Citigolf) / Jetta (later fox) Mk1 from 1982 - 2002, Golf / Jetta MkII from 1983 - 1993, Golf Mk3 from 1992 - 1996.
Make sure you have the correct bulb. They all look alike but they are different. Make sure you put it in correctly, there's a tab and slot on the bulb and you have to give it a twist to lock it in.
