Potting soil cannot rust only ferrous metals can rust. The chemical fertilizer in potting mixtures will change and lose strength if the mixture is kept too long or allowed to get wet. The mixture can still be used but may not have the full effect.
The steel wool gets wet. If you take the steel wool out (into the air) again it will rust.

Well my nana let's hers drink out of cotton balls it is fine nothing in the cotton will hurt them just make sure the cotton ball is clean if it has finger nail polish remover on it the you you got a problem
