the Ford 5.0 and ford 4.0 have a different bolt pattern and block spacing if this 4.0 is still the old German designed motor that they used from 1989 on it will not work . there is also a difference in the way the transmission is shifted in the 4.0 is electronic after sometime in the mid 90's to the older 5.0 aod transmission that was with t.v. cable to thottle body .
NO. The 2-wheel drive transmissions have a SHORTER CENTER SHAFT in them because there is no transfur case that goes on them. The 4-wheel drive transmissions have a LONGER center shaft that sticks out further because it has to go into the transfur case. You can take both transmissions apart and switch the center shafts and then it will work. It's NOT about the tail end of the transmission.
This is a big job. You have to take out the transmission. If it is 4 wheel drive it is an even bigger job. The clutch is between the engine and transmission.
That would be the manual transmission ... I have an 86 and you have to look on cased to make sure of type as long as it is 2 wheel drive
