The short answer is a qualified yes.
-If you put acrylic wall paint on a single strand of yarn (natural fiber or synthetic), the yarn will be encased in a paint that will make it more rigid, and the paint will crack if you bend the yarn.
- If you put acrylic wall paint on knitted yarn (for example a sweater) the acrylic will sit on the surface and dry to a hard finish. When the yarn bends (in the washer or in use) the paint will crack and eventually start to flake off, although it will not all come off.
- If you put acrylic craft or artists' paint on a single strand of yarn, you will get the same result as above.
- If you put acrylic craft or artists' paint on knitted yarn, yo will also get the results above.
*Note*
- If your desire is to paint on a knitted piece and have the yarn stay flexible, there is a paint medium used for fabrics (you can find it at most craft stores) that will make the paint more flexible and adhere better.
You certainly can use cotton yarn when making an afghan. The thing to remember with cotton is that is usually heavier, stretches out faster, and can shrink when washing. The main reason for using an acrylic yarn is the overall performance of the finished project. Acrylic will hold up better, stay formed better, wash and dry nicer, and last longer. With all that said, the choice is up to you - the creator of the afghan! Fran

Acrylic is a type polymers used to make textile fiber found in things like fabrics and yarn . It can also be a type of paint. Polypropylene is a type of polymer that is used to make things like textiles, rope and carpeting. The difference between the two are its uses.
Some yarns will melt. If you are making something like a potholder that will need to withstand high temperatures, it is best to use yarn made out of cotton, which will not melt. The yarns that you do not want to use are the ones made out of nylon or acrylic, like Red Heart Super Saver Yarn, which will melt and then harden again, making a very stiff plastic-like material.
fabric paint
Acrylic yarn 100% synthetic and is essentially plastic. Because plastic in itself is cheap, it makes for an inexpensive yarn. While natural fiber yarns such as wool or cotton are spun, acrylic yarns are long incredibly thin pieces of plastic that are wrapped together. Acrylic yarn is good to craft with when creating for someone with extensive allergies. It is never recommended for projects that will be near extreme heat, such as potholders. Because it is inexpensive, it is great for the beginner crocheter or knitter.
There are hundreds of types of yarn, the most commonly used might be cotton and acrylic; or you could me type by use which would include knitting and crewel yarn.

No it is not. Acrylic is plastic and will melt. Use a heat-resistant material such as wool or cotton. Cotton is fairly cheap and comes in lots of colors. Be careful of acrylic blended yarn, you will want 100% cotton or wool. The last thing you want to have happen is to end up at the hospital trying to explain to the doctor how you ended up with plastic fibers melted into your skin.

No. Wool is the raw material, yarn is another name for the string that's made from it. Yarn can be made from many materials including acrylic, cotton, nylon, bamboo and others. Wool can be used for many items besides yarn like socks and sweaters, for example.
