Not necessarily. It is first important to determine WHY you have brown grass in the first place. There are HUNDREDS of reasons why grass will go brown. From disease, to drought, to insects.

If the reason is an insect pest such as white grubs (in cool climate) or mole crickets (in warm climate) then detergent will do nothing to help your lawn. (Oddly enough though, Dawn detergent is used to flush out insects in an effort to diagnose a pest problem!)

If you have a disease problem which has killed the crown of the plant, then no amount of water will bring it back to life.

However, if the reason for your brown spot is because your soil has gone hydrophobic (ie. it will not TAKE IN water) and therefore the lawn has dried out, a solution of 1 part dawn to 20 parts water will be enough to lower the surface tension of the water and allow it to penetrate the soil and hopefully rehydrate the roots. If you have Kentucky Bluegrass, or some other "Drough Avoiding" species of grasss, it should come back to life within a few days of being rehydrated.

However, you should know that if the problem has gotten so bad that the grass has died as a result of the drought stress, you are best to re-seed or re-sod the area and start from scratch!

Can you damage a lawn mower by cutting long grass?

No, you will not damage a lawn mower by cutting long grass. A lawn mower is designed to cut grass. You may damage the blades if you mow over a exposed tree root or a rock. If the grass is really long and thing just raise the height of the mower and take it slow but don't worry you won't damage the mower. This is just an urban myth.

How do you choose lawn?

You choose your type of lawn based on the amount of sunlight that you have in your property. You also need to take into account the type of soil that you will be growing the lawn in. Another factor to take into account is the amount of trees on the property, because the roots will also impact the grass growth.

Shold you dethatch before you overseed your lawn?

There are two schools of thought on this one. 1) Those who prefer dethatching say that by removing the old dead grass, it makes it easier for new seed to take hold and start growing to fill out the lawn. 2) Those who prefer core aeration say that you have thatch because nutrients and water can't get down into your lawn to keep your current grass growing. If you dethatch and overseed, you won't take care of the proximate cause. I plan to do a core aeration of my lawn in the fall then overseed it. Once water and fertilizer can get deep into the lawn and help the new grass develop good strong roots while strengthening the roots of the current lawn, new grass will grow and thicken the lawn. That's just one amateur gardener's perspective.

How can you stop brown patches on your lawn from dog wee?

I have a Stonehenge Bulldogge and it seems that his wee is the most potent ever! What works is after the dog goes to the bathroom, go outside with a gallon of water and pour it over the spot he just went on. The cause of this is the high levels of nitrogen in dog urine. Oddly enough, nitrogen is used in lawn fertilizer, and what happens when you apply lawn fertilizer without watering later? It burns the grass! Your best bet is to dilute the urine after the dog pees. Your grass will come back, but it will take a bit of time.

How do you grow your lawn?

Take good care of your grass and water it and cut it every time your grass grows too tall. In addition: Fertilizer and weed control may be applied at different times during the growing season. Aerating the soil is also good for helping the grass roots. Watch for pests that may be causing damage to the lawn and treat as needed.
