The earth will eventually be unable to support life, when our sun runs out of hydrogen fuel in a few billion years time. The sun will expand towards the end of its life and cause temperatures to soar on Earths surface.

There are several types of danger. Some are man-made and more immediate while others may happen but on a time scale which is more uncertain. The final one in this list though is unavoidable but some way off.

• The accepted view of most scientists from most countries is that burning fossil fuels is causing climate change. Climate change does not have to mean global warming in every place: warming oceans could halt the Gulf Stream and that is what makes UK winters much warmer than at similar latitudes across the Atlantic. The South coast of England, for example, is further north than the northernmost part of the US (except Alaska).
  
• The earth can sustain a finite population. Developments in agriculture enable us to sustain a population of 7 billion, but the population will continue to increase for some time yet. And with it there will be a demand for more resources including land. Most Natural Resources are finite and the demand for these could lead to wars. They are already affecting the ecosystem, through deforestation and the loss of land used by other life forms. The use of pesticides, for example, has greatly increased crop yields but now threatens bees. Without bees pollination of food-bearing plants will be severely compromised.
• Human beings have been at war through most of their history and advances in science have made us even more efficient at killing one another. Whether fighting for resources, or for nationhood, or for religious or political reasons, we cannot stop killing our fellow human beings.
• There are many other ways in which human beings can threaten our continued existence, and in my view, they probably will bring about the destruction of human kind,
• Then there are natural causes. There are Earth based ones such as super volcanoes. The last known eruption was around 75,000 years ago in Sumatra (Indonesia) . There is one, for example, which sits under Yellowstone National Park in the North West US. A super volcano eruption could result in more that 1,000 cubic kilometres of matter being thrown up high into the atmosphere. This would result in major disruption to the global weather system for many years.
• Then there are extraterrestrial events such as a collision with a comet, asteroid or meteor. Such a collision is also capable of throwing up huge clouds of dust which could obscure the sun for long periods and trigger an ice age.
• Whatever happens, this last one will get the earth. Around 5 billion years from now, the Sun will have used up all its hydrogen and will move the next phase of it life. As it does so, it will swell into a red giant whose radius will engulf the orbits of Mercury and Venus. Whether or not it swallows up the Earth is irrelevant because by that stage the earth will be a burnt cinder.
