No. Several Things Go Wrong With Speedometers. Cable Break, Plastic Gear In The Back Of Speedometer Housing, Or In The Housing Of The Transmission. But No It Will Not Hurt The Transmission.

Try replacing the speedometer switch on the transmission.. that's probably your culprit.

On a 1989, the speedometer signal comes from the sensor in the housing where the passenger side axle shaft goes in the transmission.
usually it's the speedometer cable that goes bad, you can reach behind the dash and unplug it from the speedometer and with some pliers undo it from the transmission. If you can spin one end and the other does not spin it is bad.
